Mille Miglia veteren

Debuting in December 1955, the 93A, designed by Sixten Sason, was Saab’s second production automobile. Powered by a longitudinally-mounted three-cylinder 748 cc two-stroke engine, it boasted 33 hp (25 kW) and a three-speed gearbox. With this car, SAAB and Erik Carlsson upset the best rally teams in the world, winning victories in the Finnish Rally (1957) and the Swedish Rally (1959), showcasing the 93’s prowess as a rally car.

Boasting just 65,000 km since new, this distinctive Saab 93A has undergone an extensive overhaul, both cosmetically and technically. Saab paint professionals meticulously sanded, primed, and painted the bodywork. At the same time, the original engine and gearbox were rebuilt and modernized by SAAB engine specialist Bengt-Erik Strom who built engines for SAAB factory drivers the likes of Per Eklund and Stig Bloomqvist. The restoration extends to all mechanical components, including the brake system, generator, fuel pump, starter motor, carburettor, and cooling system. Noteworthy details include an original Saab sports steering wheel and a period-correct Halda Tripmaster distance meter.

In 2009, this ‘93A’ became the first Saab to participate in the Mille Miglia Storica since Charlie Lohmander and Harald Kronegard won first in class in the last Mille Miglia race ever held in 1957. It successfully participated in the 2010 event, driven by Jan-Ake Jonsson, former CEO of Saab Automobile (link: Saab World). With a valid Mille Miglia Storica registration certificate and a FIVA certificate of authenticity, the Saab is ready for the upcoming event in June 2024.
